Tanzania has been on a journey of rigorous development focusing on different sectors throughout the nation. One of this is the energy sector. In 2018, the government ordered Tanesco(Tanzania’s Electric Supply Company) to stop importing Luku meters and to buy locally produced ones.

Single phase energy meter is used for home appliances- it is a device that measures the amount of electric energy consumed by a residence, a business, etc. TANESCO uses electric meters installed at their client’s premises for monitoring and billing purposes.

While the country is on a mission to electrify the nation, including its rural areas, it is important that these energy meters are accessible in large quantities. Previously, Tanzania had been purchasing its single-phase meters from China and other countries. These cost a lot more than they would, had they been produced here in Tanzania itself. As a result, some of the top premium product’s manufacturers have initiated new plants here in Tanzania, with the support of the government, to manufacture and/or assemble Luku meters here itself. This brings an increase in the meter availability compared to waiting for imported meters to arrive from abroad.

Multicable Limited opened its first energy meter plant in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, on the 5th of October 2020. The inauguration was done by Hon. Dr Medard Kalemani, Minister of Energy Tanzania. The plant has the capacity to assemble up to 1000 meters per day, and its quality standards have been approved by TANESCO. This has brought employment opportunities for many women who have been trained with the skill set and are responsible for the entire process of assembling these meters. The company believes in diversity and equality with the motto: “Mwanamkeakiwezeshwa, anaweza”, which means, “If a woman is empowered, she CAN! (do anything)”.
